About us and why we love San Pedro
We are Flora and Flemming. We have created countless crazy projects together, always focusing on new and better ways of producing, distributing and consuming food. Our food and concepts have been called magical by many of the big, respected media and inspired to similar projects around the world.
We have worked with local food/farm to table before we knew it had a name, and with sustainability and healthy food for over 15 years. We have worked like horses, raised 4 girls and gone through Hell and come to Heaven in San Pedro la Laguna.
In April 2025, right after our arrival to San Pedro, we went through a crazy media storm that shaped us and made us even more sure that our quest to create a softer life with less stress and drama was important for us personally as well as for the planet. You can read more about the shitstorm below here, if you are curious.
San Pedro la Laguna has been like getting one big, warm hug, as the town is populated by the most warm-hearted people we have ever met. We are in a village that must be the world leader of urban gardening. We have been advocating for urban gardening – especially in suburbs, for many years. And what happens? We end up in a Mayan town where we are surrounded by gardens growing bananas, onion, kale, corn, chickens – you name it! If you look in one direction – you see one of the most beautiful lakes in the world and if you look the other way, you look at Volcano San Pedro. It's also noisy with the super charming tuk-tuks styled like crazy, regular fireworks from the church and lots of street dogs.
One thing is for sure: Here you can put your certificates, windmills and CO2 standards up your ass! The lifestyle in San Pedro la Laguna is way more sustainable than any green certified city or town in countries that the West call role models. Here, a tuk tuk, that drives way more miles per gallon than a car, is filled up with people going in different directions. Food is mainly sold fresh at the daily – and huge! – markets. There are no over-filled roads with big, fancy cars with one person in each of them. Here, the boats are full before they leave the dock to take you to neighbor villages. The locals wash their clothes in the lake by hand. No fancy machines from China that demand electricity. Frugality is cherished, overconsumption is not. Families are tight and important – the same with the community. The way of life here is truly sustainable, without a single label or certificate to prove it.
About the shitstorm
We have always been darlings of the press with our first moving concepts focusing on showcasing the beauty of nature. In April 2025 we made headline news again, as we ended up in a wild – literal – shitstorm focusing on our use of compost toilets at the permaculture resort we were running in Sweden.
We were contacted by a Danish journalist who had worked on a case about us over a longer period of time. He had dug out every person who had something negative to say about us and put together a long list of claims about pretty big topics like tax fraud, illegal business, environmental scandals, hiding money offshore, leaving animals to die and much more. None of it was true, which we told him.
We received an email with 30 questions that we answered thoroughly and honestly. We wrote that if he doubted any of our explanations, he should not hesitate to ask us for documentation. We also did an interview lasting more than 2 hours, again to reject the false claims. When the paper came out, the journalist had kept most of the lies and angled the rest to keep a clear portrait of us as lying, stealing, polluting, animal-abusing frauds. The article got a lot of attention, and ended up being copied by media all over the World, and got spread near and far via social media with the consequence that we received a storm of angry comments and several dead threats over the few weeks that the media storm lasted.
Both we, a communication consultant, and several former employees have been contacting the press to make them re-write the stories, but without any luck. The true story is not as good as the false one. And what can we do anyway, when the mob has made their verdict? Not that much other than to accept it and keep doing what we believe is for the highest good. Which is to keep creating beauty, keep enjoying our lives, and keep sharing about what we believe is good and right.
Who do you trust the most - the media or those who actually try to make a difference?
If you are here and you read this far, we trust that you are one of the many who no longer trust much of what you read in the media. We are sad and sorry that our beautiful dreams and projects were abused as clickbait and to create drama in a time when we all need peace and compassion more than ever, but we know what and who we are, and so do the people who care about us.
And to the journalists who has it as their jobs to spread lies for likes: In case you wonder why the trust in the media has never been lower and you keep losing colleagues: Look in the fucking mirror! Every year, there is more poison in our water. The oceans are dying. Species are going extinct. Some of them may be key species – species that whole ecosystems depend on. Maybe even we humans. Overconsumption, poison, corruption, greed and manipulation is causing illegal wars. Millions of people are suffering for minerals and oil, mines in Africa with kids working like slaves in a toxic environment so we can have more batteries for our addictive smartphones and ‘CO2-friendly’ cars? And you twist and angle and lie about us? A resort that supported local and clean food, didn't bring any toxic chemicals into the resort, built up topsoil in a responsible and fully legal way as an alternative to building sewers and flushing 1000s liter of clean water out via pipes – out of sight, out of mind. We went all in. From a couple that has worked with these topics long before it was a thing mainstream media even knew about. A couple that has always had old cars, small houses and skipped holidays with our kids year after year, because it matters to us to do our bit in leaving the planet better than when we came here. We see it as the only decent thing to do, and as something that is way more important than how much (or little) money we make.
So, if you believe that we are good, honest, hardworking people who has struggled against a crazy system, inspired many, been abused by many, sacrificed a lot, always tried our best - then you are a very welcome guest at the counter of our beautiful kitchen, and our other outlets. If this is you – thank you! You matter!
As a sidenote: The scammers are never the pioneers. Scammers come in second and third wave after the pioneers.. It is said that you recognize a pioneer by the arrows in the back, and we have experienced that this is sad but true.
If you, on the other hand, believe in media telling you that we are neoliberal frauds, we kindly suggest you find another place to spend your time. It's not good for any of us to be around each other. You get triggered by us and you are not making our life better either.
We want to be happy and to feel safe, and we want this for every other living being on the planet. This is our daily prayer, and this is what we get up to contribute to every day of our short life here on Earth.
