Why San Pedro Is the Best Place to Stay at Lake Atitlán

Looking for the perfect base to explore Lake Atitlán, Guatemala? Here's why we think San Pedro La Laguna is hard to beat.

Lake Atitlán is surrounded by beautiful villages, each with its own character. But if you're planning to spend a few days – or even a few weeks – exploring the lake, we believe San Pedro La Laguna is one of the very best places to call home.

And we're not just saying that because we live here!

From easy boat connections and beautiful beaches to volcano hikes, excellent coffee and a surprisingly vibrant nightlife, San Pedro has a little bit of everything.

Here are six reasons why we love it.

1. The Perfect Starting Point for Exploring Lake Atitlán

One of San Pedro's biggest advantages is its location, it’s many travel agencies and excellent boat connections.

The town has two main public docks, making it easy to explore different parts of Lake Atitlán.

From one dock (embarcadero de Pana), boats connect San Pedro with villages such as San Marcos La Laguna, San Juan La Laguna and Panajachel. From the other (embarcadero de Santiago), you can travel towards Santiago Atitlán and explore the southern side of the lake.

This means you can spend your days discovering colorful villages, visiting local markets, swimming at different beaches or enjoying lunch somewhere new – and still return to San Pedro in time for dinner.

Our tip: Make San Pedro your base and explore the lake one village at a time. There's no need to pack your bags and change hotels every couple of days.

2. Some of the Best Beaches at Lake Atitlán

Not everyone realizes that Lake Atitlán has beautiful beaches – and we think some of the very best are around San Pedro.

While the waterfront in the center of town can be busy with boats and not suitable for swimming, a short walk away you'll find quieter stretches of shoreline, beautiful swimming spots and wonderful views of the surrounding volcanoes.

Outside of town the water is clear and the atmosphere peaceful. You will oftentime have the beach to yourself.

There's something pretty magical about starting your day with a swim in the lake, surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. That’s how we prefer to start our days.

Our tip: Right outside our gate you find our favorite beach of the entire lake.

3. Endless Nature Walks and Outdoor Adventures

If you love nature, San Pedro is a wonderful place to be.

The town sits at the foot of Volcán San Pedro, with trails leading into the surrounding mountains, forests and countryside.

You can challenge yourself with a volcano hike, take a peaceful morning walk along the lake or explore the paths through coffee plantations and farmland.

There are also opportunities for horseback riding, kayaking and other outdoor adventures.

And the best part? You don't necessarily need to organize a big excursion to experience nature. Sometimes all it takes is stepping outside and following a quiet path.

Our tip: Don't miss the beautiful walks into town from the hotel by the beach, where you'll find lovely views, locals tending to their vegetable fields and washing their clothes in the lake, and a completely different side of San Pedro than the downtown tourist area most people know if for.

4. The Most Vibrant Nightlife at Lake Atitlán

San Pedro has a reputation for being Lake Atitlán's nightlife capital – and for good reason.

There's something for almost everyone, whether you enjoy a relaxed drink overlooking the water or dancing until sunrise (at the secret afterparties, since bars have to close at 11).

You'll find everything from lively bars and pub crawls to boat parties, electronic music events, live concerts and intimate performances by talented musicians and DJs.

Our tip: If you love the energy of San Pedro but also appreciate a good night's sleep, stay a little outside the busiest center. Tuk tuks are easy to get throughout the day and night and cost just 10Q per ride per person.

5. Great Coffee, Cafés and Restaurants

San Pedro has a growing café culture, with plenty of places to enjoy a good cup of locally grown coffee, a leisurely breakfast or an afternoon spent reading, working or simply watching village life unfold.

The town also has an interesting mix of restaurants, from traditional Guatemalan kitchens to international cafés and more ambitious dining experiences.

Whether you're looking for a quick, inexpensive lunch or a special evening out, you'll find plenty of options.

And of course, you're always welcome to visit us at La Cocina Bonita, where we serve homemade food prepared with carefully sourced local ingredients.

6. A Real Mayan Town with a Life of Its Own

Perhaps the thing we appreciate most about San Pedro is that it's not just a tourist destination.

It's a real, living town, home to a predominantly Tz'utujil Maya community with deep roots in the area.

Local families, markets, traditional clothing, everyday conversations in Tz'utujil and the rhythms of village life are all part of what makes San Pedro special.

Tourism is certainly part of the town, but it doesn't define everything.

For us, that makes San Pedro feel more authentic and interesting than a place created primarily for visitors.

We have found so much warmth, generosity and friendliness here, and we feel incredibly fortunate to call this place home.
